A quick check around and most people would list Northern Bay Sands, Burgeo Sandbanks, Lumsden and Labrador's Wonderstrands among their favourite beaches in Newfoundland and Labrador. Do you have a favourite beach you want to give a "shout out" to? We're talking about beaches and beachcombing in the August issue of Downhome and we need your help identifying the best beaches around.

Pasadena Beach, while not on the ocean, proves itself to be quite a popular beach in the summer. Nice clean sand, trees, proper garbage disposals, and a nice restaurant called The Oasis garnishes the area. The lake, called Deer lake, is clean, cool and often very wavy on a windy day. The beach was a popular retreat for Corner Brookers back in the 50s and 60s as many would ride the train and get off at the A.Watton and Sons store which is just about a hundred yards or less from the beach. The store still stands there today. Come and canoe, swim, build sand castles and/or suntan to your heart's content. Then enjoy the music there at night. You probably will see me and the trio there!

There's a park near Musgrave Harbour that has a beautiful beach that will rival Miami Beach any day. I don't remember the name of that park, though. It's been many years since we were there. |

Topsail Beach, while rocky, is a lovely beach to go to swim and to watch the sunset. There are fireplaces all along the beach so it's a great place to have a fire and roast some marshmallows with the family after the sun sets. There's also a trail in the woods for hikers, public washrooms, a fine big rock for kids to climb, and a great view of the islands. It's a perfect get away from daylight till dark.
Here are some pictures of an evening there with our grandchildren last summer.
The kids caught a little starfish and were keeping it wet while studying it.

The great climbing rock. It's in shallow water but the kids felt like mountain climbers.

The sun sets on Topsail Beach.

Fires all up the beach

I really shouldn't be telling all the Downhome readers of this very private beach because I love going there and having it all for myself!! But I'll share it cause I'm such a good fellow!! lol
Remember South Brook Park that had the old steam locomotive 593 parked there near the railway tracks? I'm sure you must have seen that train since the park was only about 20 miles east of Corner Brook. Well, although the park camping spots and trailers are no longer available, you can still drive down and experience the beach which faces west and looks down the Humber River and beautiful Humber Valley in the distance.
The beach actually has a point which divides the area from west to east. No one is ever there anymore but the sand and water are the same as ever....white soft sand and clear water. You can see the TCH but traffic is distant. Put an umbrella out and take in the August sunshine as the water is warmest then. See you there! Come over and say hello, won't you?
Here's a recent photo of the beach and point from the TCH going east towards Pasadena, and, if you look closely or even zoom in, you'll see that no one is there...as usual!

I am surprised nobody has mentioned the beach at Sandy Pond in Terra Nova National Park. It's completely sandy, the pond bottom is all sand, it's very large and accommodates thousands of people on any given sunny day, it's fresh water, and it's most always warm.
Sandy Pond.... Ah the memories. |

I don't think there is any best beach as they all beckon after our long Canadian winter months. But since Northern Bay Sands was mentioned, I feel it tops the list with it's clean, soft sand, little hide-away's and fresh water swimming..... And diving off the rocks...

They best kept secret in Newfoundland is Salmon Cove Sands. Beautiful beach, beautiful walking trails. You can even see a Bald Eagle or two.

Life's journey is not to arrive at the Pearly Gates safely. But rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out. Shouting, “holy s**t ....what a ride!” |

Northern Eagle I agree with you Northern Bay Sands is a beautiful beach. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the beach but you have to be careful diving off the rocks. Sometimes the tide fills the diving holes with sand. I know people who have paralyzed themselves diving at Northern Bay Sands |

Just came back from Burgeo!!! Awesome beaches there in July!!! Five of them, to be exact...all inter-connecting with small hills and sandy paths up and down...no problem to walk with bare feet either! Just beautiful!!! Yes,.... a best kept secret in Nfld! We are so lucky! On this day on July 9th/2010, there was nobody there but us and another couple!

Yeah jacob, I'm quite familiar with Northern Bay Sands. I grew up just across the neck of land in Trinity Bay. But like all great places, unless we ruin nature by erecting concrete and steel barriers, it is difficult to protect idiots from their actions when they insist on doing idiotic things.
Here is an example of what I mean.... everybody is oblivious as to what's happening, including the kid somersaulting head first into what he hopes is a deep hole.
