Hi everyone
I guess not all the girls on the island had sense, (he he) because I remember climbing those cliffs at Fresh Water, the East End, quite often , oaD catching caplin and cooking them over a fire on the beach or up on the hill overlooking the cliffs.
As a matter of fact I guess i still have some daring bones in this ole body because when Leo & I were home 5 years ago when we had the 1st reunion on Bell Island, the week following the reunion we went back to the island again and leo & I climbed down the side of the cliff and I have the pics to prove it.me siting out on that big rock when tide was out.
I still can't believe I ever did it as a child never mind as an adult.
But like they say If its there you climb it. Not sorry I did, but don't think I will do it again this year when I am there, I certainly will go down to fresh water and sit on the hill and have a look but I think thats as far as it will go.
As for going out on the ice, thats something I never had the urge to do especially after My dad went out with another gentleman(don't remember who) to rescue a couple of brave young lads who went out and couldn't get back, probably the same ones you were talking about Jack since it was very late at night --early morning when they were rescued.I remember my dad saying If we ever went out and got caught he would leave us there, of course we knew he wouldn't but we also knew how much the rescue took out of him.

I remember well when my dad was presented with the Award of Valor, we were all very proud.

The easT end girls were also not afraid of climbing the trees either, but of course if you could climb the cliff there was nothing to a tree. but we did have the cuts and bruises form the trees , good ole clean outdoor fun, can't beat it.
But yes Chic I do agree with you if we had the contraptions when we were young we probably wouldn't have done half the stuff we did.

can you imagine any of our children or grandchildren walking from east end to the front and home again after the friday night dances, or can you imagine us letting them Walk home after midnight, but then we were never alone there was always a gang going in each direction, East , west, the green, Lance cove, Good ole days weren't they.

well thats my little bit today.
We do miss you Clay if you are peeking.
don't even have your e-mail so can't even drop you a note.

Take care everyone

evening folks , hope you all had a great day . Bit chilly out there though , tomorrow is going to be the calm before the nasty weather . Man i hope we don't get much snow would rather the rain .

Lots of good stories about the good old days people , and witchie i agree with you 100% the kids of today will never know the kind of fun or growing up like we all did and to be honest a lot of todays parents give the kids too dang much.

Anyway thats my openion , hope you all have a great night and a wonderful tomorrow .

I agree with you Sea 100% on today's parents giving their kids too much. Same goes for the grandparents. You read that Witchie?

Now when I was growing up I had to steal....oh oh... I mean find whatever I wanted. Got pretty good at finding things in short order. But then I was always a fast learner, and no slouch in the running dept either. Some days I still look behind me to see who's coming. Could be someone who carries a grudge for a long, long, long, long time.

Fortunately I think I am out-living all those types.

I thought i had it good growing up - finding stuff to do outdoors - playing outside most of the time - the only modern entertainment device then was the television (with a handful of channels to watch with the aid of 'rabbit ears') ...

...but then I remember looking at Dad all wide-eyed in disbelief when he told me about life before "television" (which I couldn't fathom) - where they played outside all the time - when they had to be dragged home well past dark - and the evening's entertainment then was when the family gathered around the "radio", beside the fireplace or woodstove...

...now I get the same wide-eyed look from my own 12-year-old son when I explain to him what life was like before he was born - before the invention of all the new toys that now keep them indoors and house-bound - and, even worse, the lack of "modern technology" before I was born ...

... so now, when I get that Fred Flintstone look from my kid, I start looking to see where I parked my dinosaur!

Now Canajun
And at times we had no radio or hydro for week s at a time.
A good [ if there is such a thing] sleet storm on the island in the 50S we could be in the dark for a week or more
I remember early 50S The main power line it came under water from St Philips ?
to Bell island. the ice came in heavey and ripped it apart.. so Divers had to be Brought in
to repair it. if i remember think we where in the dark for about 3 weeks.
No battery radios then. or T V
Candles and the old Kerosene Lantern was the way and boil the kettle on the wood stove
And let me tell yeah Life was good

those 2 are over 80 years old

Ah, the good old days. Yes Al, I remember school was closed for a couple weeks then. I remember my sister caught her hair on fire on a candle too.

Now Elizabeth don't go giving away the girls' secrets. I don't know if I'd be climbing over any rocks now, but ya never know.

It's a fantastic day here on the rock so we're off to town but it's supposed to snow later so I went out and snapped a few pictures of my crocus while I can still see them. They're so cheerful I thought I'd share.

Canajun every generation seems to be better off but I am not sure they are.
Having a lot of THINGS doesn't make it better, they don't have the security of all your neighbours looking out for them and it being a good thing.
that in itself kept a lot out of trouble I think.

Well thats it for now have to go , on our way out to play cards, seesome things never change.

Take care everyone.

hi Everyone
Our time is running out here, just a week and 2 days left,I don't really care, the weather was such a turnoff.
We are into great weather now but everyone is leaving the park lol.
Chick u should be ok by the time u come to Florida,if u never checked Bealls u should check it,but check on Mon,that is the best day because u will get 15% off,if it is already marked down,u still get another 15% off.
We just had a man die here today, they took him to the hospital but died with a heart attack tonight, poor lady all alone, her family is in Ohio, they were getting ready to drive home on Sat.
These parks u just never know who is next because of the age group.
tc everyone

Ah Betty, you can bet your life I discovered Beals, both the outlets and regular stores. It's my favourite. I know where every Beals in in the St Petersburg area & Ross's & Marshals too. . Did you get to the Ellenton outlet Mall?I t's a shame you've has such bad weather. We're not going till late April so I'm sure it will be warmer by then. If not, that's all we can do about it.

Have a good one everyone.
