Greetings Everyone:
I'm Kevin's #1 son, Kevin Jr. I just wanted to stop in and say thank you to everyone for all you've said and done for my father - and for being his friend over the years.
I remember when he first got on the Internet and found this site to keep in touch with people from his hometown - he was so excited and would tell me all about the people he had connected with online, eventually connected with in real life, and with whom he corresponded on a regular basis.
I've spent a few hours on here recently trying to access the older threads, and will need to spend more time checking it all out, trying to follow his footsteps and get an insight into the people who helped him stay in touch with his roots.
We're piecing together his life story as best as possible - just so we kids can better understand our father - therefore, the recent Telegraph series posted in here about Bell Island was a great backgrounder. And the photos posted by Clayton in this recent thread, thanks so much for showing us what Bell Island looks like - please keep it up - it all looks so beautiful!
Our family plan for his memorial service is for each of his three children to deliver a part of his eulogy - to say what our father meant to each of us - and what his life was all about - what he did and who he knew - whose life he touched along the way.
If any of his friends here wish to share a special story or anecdote about him, that we can include in our eulogy or just to tell us a little more about him, please feel free to include it here in this thread or email it to me at: canajunster@gmail.com
Although my father's body will be cremated and his ashes buried in a family plot in Kingston, we have requested that some ashes be reserved for a special trip to Bell Island so we can honor his memory in his hometown sometime this year or next.
I would like to visit the Island sometime when its convenient for people who knew him to be available to tell me all kinds of stories about him, help me discover his roots, and assist us in bringing some of his remains home to rest.
If any of you fine people are available to assist us in this venture, we would greatly appreciate it if you would let us know.
In the meantime, if you can keep this forum alive for as long as possible, in my father's memory, I would be deeply grateful. I will try my best to visit it as often as possible just to stay in touch and get to know all of you better.
Thank you each and everyone for being a friend to my father - he valued his friendships with you all - and he enjoyed every moment he could to be a part of this community - it kept his spirit going when his health wasn't co-operating.
Regards,
Kevin Jr |

Hi Kevin Jr.
Thank you so much for coming into the thread and welcome . As for telling you stories about your dad there isn't much i can share with you . I only remember as a young girl he lived next door to my aunt and uncle . I used to see him over in the garden and i used to go to school with his sister. I also remember his dads old pannel station wagon they had and the night i was coming home from a school fall fair. I wasn't suppose to go as it was out at the front of the island and of course i went . I had to get home but it was so dark walking out the track and i was scared to death . But your dad's dad stopped and picked me up and took me home your aunt was in the van and i guess recognized me . I was never so greatful in all my young life hahaha i think i may have been ten or so at the time .
But i knew your dad from school ground also , tormenting the gals like a young school boy would and being older lol . Plus us younger gals thought he was kinda cute lol , they went to st. kevins and we went to the Immaculate conception school on town square . Later when we got to meet again in this thread , well of course it was a walk down memory lane and saying can you remember this one or that one . Always talking about what it was like growing up as a kid on the Island . Your dad had a great sence of humor and dry on times you would have to look at him to make sure he was joking hahaha . He was just an all over lovely person and i was proud to call him friend .
You keep coming in the thread when you can and will be lovely to have you visit .
Take care and once again my deepset sympathy to you , your mom and the rest of the family .

morning gang and welcome Kevin. If there is anything I can do for you here on Bell Island before/during your visit here please let me know. You can email me at cvokey21@hotmail.com. The first time I met your father was 3a.m on the side of the 401. He had connected with someone here in this thread and wanted to ship a box of books down here. I was living in Cambridge at the time and was on my way here so we arranged to meet and I took the books for him. |

Canajun, first of all let me say how sorry I am of the passing of your father. I knew him from School days and have a St. Kevin' old s School book, but unfortunately his pic is not in it. However you might want to see the school he attended. I have scanned a front and side view for you. Not the best quality but you may like to see them anyway. The school was much better maintained in our day.
The building to the left on the first pic is St. Pat's theatre where we all went after school to watch our cowboy movies and serials. Ten cents it cost us.

Your father's thread will be in this Kitchen for a long time. At least till the last of his old comrades join him.
May God bless him and the family he left behind.

Evening folks , liz i think clay meant they are now torn down , all those buildings are gone . No movies on the island , most go to the city now to see a movie . I got free tickets over two years ago and still haven't gone over to see a movie lol
Was a beauty of a day here today the sun was shinning but a bit on the cold side, now all we gotta do is wait for sheila's brush . That usually comes handy to St. Paddies day but i know what sheila can do with her brush hey hahaha .. and uaually we get silver thaw but i think we had our share now .
By the way clay have fun with your new toy , boys will be boys hahaha
I guess i am home for another while , was supposed to go back to work tomorrow but staggering around for past few days like a drunk . I ended up with an ear infection after this dang flu i had , now i am on meds for that and it sucks big time . I was actually looking forward to going back to work , bags out by the door ready to go and now gotta put them back in . I am really hoping this will pass in a few days and the ship is still in the harbour and i can get cleared to join her before she sails . But i was told this thing can last up to six weeks chit not nice . Oh well what do ya do lol
Anyway everyone have a great evening and a better tomorrow
