NE. To keep your player and FTP site from becoming bloated, which it will in time, perhaps a time limit can be placed on how long songs or folders can be displayed. You may know a way to date the upload times. This way we won't have music on here forever that no one listens to anymore. Older songs can be replaced with others and we will have new music to listen to constantly.
Some of the more popular genres will eventually have hundreds of songs in them and people will get tired of hearing the earlier uploads.
This is just a suggestion as you may have other solutions to solve the bloating of your player. I would like to see this become a fixture in the Kitchen but it must be controlled or it will self destruct without any intentional abuse.

Hello DaS, good suggestion. I'll see how it goes and how many folk use it. If it gets too bloated, I'll have to make a few changes. And add a few restrictions. The intent is for Kitchen users (and there are just a few) to enjoy their music online. It may not become bloated too quickly, so for now I'll keep an eye on it.
I'll add a few comments on the web page advising folk not to copy and save songs loaded to the folders otherwise there may be copyright issues. In addition, I've restricted public folder browsing and blocked access to the folders by those pesky robots and spiders.
And if it's abused, as a first step, I can easily change the username and password to enable the folders to be accessed by those who genuinely like to use and maintain it.

Good show NE. This feature is one of the finer things to come along in a long time. With some TLC and forethought this could last and serve us all for a long, long time.
I dated my last folder so I'll know when it was uploaded, and It gives a time stamp to the others I uploaded too, as they are all within the first week of operation.

A few days ago I put restrictions on hotlinking the .mp3 files. Even though IE functioned OK, I just discovered Firefox was being blocked by these restrictions. I've tweaked the configuration a little to enable Firefox to open the .mp3's files without complaining.
If anybody has problems, let me know and I'll check it out. |

Works great in Firefox for me NE. It wouldn't work in Firefox when you first put it here. I even think it sounds better in this browser than IE. I have to give a listen using IE again. Could be my ears are working better tonight or (or cleaner).

Spent a couple of hours last night comparing the sound in both browsers. I don't understand why, but Firefox seems to give a richer, fuller sound on every song.
I had the player opened in both browsers and switching between the two with the same song playing and in every case each one seemed to be just a tad better in Firefox. |

Tried IE and Firefox and music still all broke up. Am I missing something or is because I am on dial up?
Thanks for reply,
Jim
Very happy to be this side of the grass. |

That's too bad Newfiewanabe. Some good music in that player. Dial up would cause it to break up if haven't got the hi speed type. Did you have any other programs running at the time? Closing these may help. You can even close IE and browser and hear all the songs you want by using the pop up payer. Perhaps you can use it this way while not using the computer for anything else. Background music while you do other household duties.
Glad you popped in. |

Tried it but nothing works. Look great and easy to use. I'm just not able to get better internet service so have to do with slow dial up. Thank You for the suggestions Stinker.

Hello newfiewanabe.
We have reduced the file size by configuring mp3's for 128 kbps. This will enable slower networks to stream fine, however dial up may still be a problem. I suggest to allow the file to stream until 100% has been downloaded. Then play uninterrupted from your browser cache. I realize this may be inconvenient, however, it's one method of enabling the player to function on a slower system.
As an alternative, is Bell Unplugged (Portable or Rural) available in your area? |

DaS, I didn't open with FireFox and I'm not getting the alert when using IE.
The site is owned by Ma Bell so I wouldn't consider it a security problem. Also the links will take you to (http://www.bell.ca/)
Here are the links listed on this page for:
Bell Internet - Portable (Unplugged)
Bell Internet - Rural |

NE,
Unfortunately Bell is not available in my area. HI Speed by Shaw is 7 pole links from my house and they will be happy to extend it to my place for the small sum of $10,000.00. So I said Thank You.

$10,000.00?!??!!
That's out of hand, eventually they extend it past your house, and they may come sniveling to you for permission to put a hub on your property, tell them "yes, for $10,000.00"
The people on this site deserve a better class of pot stirrer, and I'm gonna give to them... |

Forgive quickly!
Kiss slowly!

Way to go Gordie! I had a hunch you were working on posting in NE's player. I thought about asking if you needed any help but decided you were trying it on your own and would ask when you were ready. I was right on my hunch. Be sure to tell everyone that fact will you.
The speed is about right for this type of upload so outside of that what do you think of NE's project?
I am lucky to have a extra computer to use for uploading while I can still use this one for other things. The other one has two monitors which makes it even easier to see everything at once.
Good job my man. Now I'll go check out your songs. I know they will be good ones. You have good taste in music too. |

Hey Gord. I knew you were up to the challenge. And 'twasn't too difficult. Same as moving files to other folders on your own computer.
Keep em' coming. You have many great old songs on vinyl. |

Just explored this section tonight - and tried out the media player - works fantastic!
Thanks so much NE for setting this up - and to all the contributors for all your uploads! I'm having a blast checking out old tunes I grew up on and new ones I've never heard before.
Please keep it going!! And thanks again for all your efforts!! |
