**************************************************************************************
*
* EDIT: I'll make it a sticky for awhile so it doesn't disappear into the archives while others are still uploading files.
*
**************************************************************************************
I've configured a media player. A little Christmas - New Year's gift for our Downhome Kitchen Members.
1) This is the basic Version. I've uploaded a few songs.
2) It's configured it to play .mp3 files only
3) If you are happy with it, I'll post a link to enable you to upload your own music, Maybe even create your own genre if it doesn't fit into the present configuration.
4) Sorry guys, if it is abused, I'll have to remove it.
Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year to y'all.
....................................Downhome Kitchen Media Player
______________________________________________
.............................. How to Upload Your Own Music to the Player
To add your own music, I recommend you use your "Windows Explorer".
If you are unfamiliar with ftp file transfer I suggest that you not use "Internet Explorer". When using Windows Explorer, copying .mp3 files to the server is simply drag and drop, or copy and paste, the same as copying files between folders on your own computer.
Copy and paste the following link to your Windows Explorer Address Bar:
ftp://DHK-Music:Kitchen-1@TedsHanger.com
Then drop and drag your music to the selected genre. Or if you want to add a new Genre, create a new folder, the same as if it were on your own computer. The next time you open the music player, you will see the genre you created and music files you uploaded.
A couple pointers:
1) Files must be MP3 format
2) Suggest 128 kbps bitrate. Higher bitrates mean larger files and may cause hesitation during playback. If you experience hesitation, let me know and I may be able to correct.

Hey NE, that's a great player. Question. Who is Kevin Head. I never heard of him and all I can find if a Pop/Rock guy with that name who is an entirely different guy. I like that guy and his song in the player.

DaS, Kevin Head is a singer from up around the Kingston, ON area. He has lots of great songs.
-------------------------
I'm gonna post a link tomorrow that will enable anybody to access the server and upload their own music.
And if they want to create a new genre, such as "Christmas Music", all they need do is create a folder on the server called "Christmas Music", and upload their songs into it.
In addition, I will create a small popout version of it so they can continue to access the DH Kitchen (or browse other sites), while listening to their favorite music.
Stay tuned, there's more to come. There'll be something for everybody.
However if it's abused, I'll have to remove it from my server. Also, it's for DHK users only. |

I added a link in the first post to enable you to add your own music to the player. You can also create your own Genre if you don't see anything that suits.
Please make sure you add your music to the correct genre.
This folder isn't public. I prepared it for our Kitchen members (and peekers). Sorry guys, but if it's abused, I'll have to remove it. |

Hi NE - I wish I understood half of what you are talking about - citrates I know, bitrates uh-uh - not so. BUT, I can listen to the music even if I am not capable of adding any. I was in NL recently and I bought two Lloyd Bartlett CD's - a Christmas one ( guitar and cello ), and the other was NL songs - guitar only. Very nice if you can find some of those to add.
Hopefully the service will not be abused. Thanks for adding it. |

I just finalized the popout I promised. Click on the link to open the popout and close the supporting window. Then you can continue access the DHS orbrowse with the player in a smaller popout window.
Nova Newfie, if you send me the mp3 files of your songs, I'll post them to the player for you. |

Das, I just took a peek on my server to see what you've uploaded.
By the way you can even create a folder called "Stinkers Favorites" if you want. Then you can upload your music collection to it and access it throught the player.
And not to worry, if it becomes too convoluted, I can do some reorganization. |

I have a lot of tearjerkers in my folder and I was thinking of placing them in their own folder, but didn't want to clutter up you player. This player is so easy to use you should have plenty of contributors.
Some may be be confused by the fact that Windows Explorer is used rather than an online browser like IE but it's easy to work with one monitor.
Instructions for those who may need help.
You only have to open two instances of Windows Explorer, one full screen for your player, in which you post NE's URL in the address bar hit the arrow that loads the site. The folders will show. Minimized the second to about half screen and browse to your songs folder. Then just drag one or more songs to any folder you want. It will take about 50 secs or or less for each song to transfer. A bar will show you the process and your song screen will drop to the task bar during this operation. After the songs are uploaded just bring you songs folder up again and continue till all your songs are transferred. It is a pretty fast operation.
Go the the player in NE's thread and there are your songs for everyone's enjoyment.

DaS.......I'll add an edit here. Re. FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
There are several ways to use ftp to transfer files to a web server. You can use an ftp client such as FileZilla (there are many). Or if using IE-6, you can also transfer files since it also has a built in ftp client. However IE7 and higher will allow you to view the files, but request that you use Windows Explorer to transfer files.
For this reason I sggested to use Windows Explorer. It works for everybody (except for die-hard Apple users). And keeps it simple.
Note, the link I provided is a shortcut that includes UserName, Password and Web Address to specific folders with the .mp3 files on my web server.

GR, are you using Windows Explorer. You cannot use Internet Explorer 7 or higher. But Windows Explorer should allow this. The Username and Password is built into the link I provided. Anybody with ftp capabilities (Filezilla, Windows Explorer, etc) can access the server with this username and password. I haven't configured any restrictions.
-------------------
Edit:
OK GR, I knew you would figure it out. I guess I replied too quickly.

Newfie songs coming up NE. Probably tonight I'll work on some and post them. I never post a song until I listen to it fully and take out the long silent spaces at the start and end, plus any big pops or clicks that we fine in the older ones.
I also have a load of old LPs of Newfie music that I have to convert. Those may take some time and I have to make time to take that time, if you know what I mean.
I suspect a lot of our members don't have the means or know-how to convert CDs to MP3 or understand bitrates. I now many computers users who don't now what WMP or WinAmp can do except play music. Not knocking them but they use their puters for only a few selected uses . I also know they have extensive music collections which makes us lose out big time. Breaks my heart. |

Yeah GR, I like these Wimpy audio and video players. And it will run on any server that supports PHP, ASP or ColdFusion (My site is using PHP - lower cost). You can also use javascript to configure and call the player. It is much more flexible and easier to use than Windows A/V Media Player. And I prefer it over Longtail's JW Video Player.
After testing, I've been using it for awhile on another site and quite happy with it. It's simple, reliable and very configurable. As well as modifying existing skins, as I did here, you can create your own with tools they provide at no additional charge. (I had to get rid of the Wimpy logo on the skin. I didn't like it. Sounded too wimpy. ;-)
BTW, it's quite inexpensive. Their full A/V package is just $90.00 whle the audio player and button is just $40.00. And if you don't want the button, you can save another $10 bucks. And if you dont want to purchase immediately, they give you a fully functional 'trial' package for 15 days. |

Thanks, DaS.
Yeah, I know many have good music libraries and cannot take advantage of an online player because of lack of know-how. This is quite understandable.
However, if anybody is interested, we can provide information. I don't expect folk to create their own online players, but we can help them take advantage of the one that I created for this site. And it's not just myself, but maybe others who have the know-how wouldn't mind sharing, including you, GR and others.
Just tell us what you would like to rip, burn, upload, etc and we can tell you how.
I expect GR may be coming up with a Wimpy video player soon. ;-)) |
